Biography

Carl C. Bell, M.D. is a staff psychiatrist in the Psychosis Program, and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is also a Clinical professor of Public Health at the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition, Dr. Bell is staff psychiatrist at Jackson Park Hospital’s Family Practice Clinic and at St. Bernard Hospital’s Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. He is the former Director of the Institute of Juvenile Research and the former President/C.E.O. of the Community Mental Health Council, Inc. He earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1967, and Medical Degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1971. He completed his residency in Psychiatry in 1974 after training at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute and the Institute for Juvenile Research in Chicago. Dr. Bell is an internationally recognized authority on racism, misdiagnosis of affective disorders, children exposed to violence prevention, HIV prevention, Isolated Sleep paralysis, and resiliency. He has an extensive background in psychiatric treatment, research, education, and administration. Author or co-author of more than 400 books, monographs, chapters, articles and technical reports.
